«cantos a nenette» | ensemble del cerro

The project Cantos a Nenette is a cycle of songs presenting a 30-minute minimal contemporary composition, an homage to a French/Canadian-born composer, pianist and writer Antonietta Paule Pepin Fitzpatrick (1908–1990), who lived in Argentina from the 1930s until her death. Also known as ”Nenette”, she was recognized as an Argentine artist despite her French nationality. She became a co-author of some of the most significant works of her husband and artistic partner, Atahualpa Yupanqui, who was a popular Argentine singer, guitarist and songwriter. However, due to the machismo of the era, Nenette’s works could only be published under a male pseudonym, Pablo del Cerro.

Rediscovering Nenette’s underrated artistic legacy, the project deals with herstory in the real sense of the word. It raises questions about a musician’s identity adapting to the systemic circumstances of war, patriarchy and on a personal level – romantic alliance. We pursue further study of this liquid sense of belonging as we come from different cities to meet in our music in the multicultural and international ensemble. The music moves between dance and stillness; the simplicity of the materials creating a space for listening. Similar to a mosaic which is composed of unique and varying fragments, all the material unfolds slowly during the listening. The cycle was recorded in Warsaw and was released by Rumiarec in April 2023.
